35 minutes were left to the beginning
of the set of CAPTAIN HOOK at a small hotel
at the dutch Ijssel. Guests were bewildered
and nervous. Me too. The very good fingerfood
at ZWARTEWATER stabilized the concelebrators
of a 50^thbirthday party.

First two men – organist and bassist –
arrived on the scene. It took not an hour

to place two boxes; drums; equipment.
After a small meal the band took the stage -
ready for funk-jazz.

Their CDs GET HOOKED and F.EX are fine
introductions to CAPTAIN HOOK. Also
their material on the internet gives an
idea of how the vibes of CAPTAIN HOOK work.

What is the jazz style of CAPTAIN HOOK? Bop?

Our birthday-crowd was not used to this modern

jazz. Some had just passed a german beer-event

SCHUETZENFEST VECHTEL with top40-vibes and German

Beer-Drinking-Vibes. One of the guests is a

dj, who lives in the times of our local DISCO

Astonishingly many were on there feet and

dancin to funk-jazz – without knowin

how this was workin out.

Get CAPTAIN HOOK, if you are lookin for funky
and percussive jazz sounds. People,
who are looking for soul-covers are not so
happy with captain hook.

Impressive is the variety of jazz – standards.

“Girl from Ipanema” and others were turned

in a unique CAPTAIN-HOOK-Style.

In may 2010 HANK JONES died. So the last piece
was a piece of him in remembrance.

In 1979 – my year of birth – we heard TO BE
from a cassette on a legendary tour to the
German OSTSEE. AJ was thrown out of a pub.
But driven with TO BE on the casette was very relaxing.

They are Nr. 10-15 of dutch/nederlandse/niederlaendischen
Jazz-Bands. They should be on the agenda of the

greatest dutch jazz festival: NORTH SEA JAZZ.

They should be a permanent act and a perfect act

for after-festival celebrations. In German: There is some “LUFT NACH OBEN”!

If you hear CRUSADERS or NEW CRUSADER life at

NORTH SEA JAZZ, you know, that some Americans

are in another league. But there is in the near

future a road for CAPTAIN HOOK to go in the

steps of these titanic giants and get near

their niveau.

For other bands I would advice strongly to

engage a perfect female-vocalist with a

leather-trouther and a real stage presence.

A performer and eventually some trax with a
shouter sould enhance the european

notice/percection/kenntnisnahme or fame of CAPTAIN HOOK.

The poor and stripped down to basics-jazz is a precious
and rare thing. A little bit of BOOKER T and soul or funk

should generate an countless and enthusastic crowd in front of

CAPTAIN HOOK.

Trombonist Bart Lust was onder de indruk van Captain Hook
toen hij twee jaar geleden een gastbijdrage had op hun
laatste cd ‘f.ex’. Hij stelde daarom een duo-concert in
het Bimuis voor. Captain Hook is een frisse band die al
een tijdje aan de weg timmert. In beschrijvingen van de
formatie komt vaak het woord ‘groove’ voor; de band
lijkt invloeden te vinden in de funkjazz uit de jaren
zeventig, spierballen van Chris Potter en soms ook een
vleug Soulive. De composities zitten goed in elkaar en
bevatten sterke, feilloos ingestuurde thema’s. Het
enthousiasme van de muzikanten (Iman Spaargaren tenor-
en sopraansax, Santeri Sulkunen gitaar, Daan Herweg piano,
fender rhodes, Pieter Hoogervorst basgitaar, Pieter-Jan
Nijessen drums) was interessant te aanschouwen.

Tot echte ‘groovende’ funk kan Captain Hook echter niet
worden ingedeeld. Zeker in het begin bleken de thema’s
bijhoorlijk doordacht waar alle muzikanten angstig met
hun handen vanaf bleven. Creativiteit en lef werden
moeilijk geuit. Solo’s bleven leeg en fatsoenlijk;
gesyncopeerde ritmes in bedachte maatsoorten werden
netjes uitgevoerd naar de mogelijkheden van de individuen.
De muzikanten leken gespannen. Pas na een half uurtje werd
enige schroom weggegooid. Herweg blonk uit in begeleiding
en voornamelijk solo’s met een opvallend omvangrijke
ambitus. Het is een formatie met veel ideeën en
compositorisch talent, maar zonder brutaliteit waarmee
ze zich kunnen onderscheiden.

Klassieke saxen kunnen het best aardig vinden met de

jazzfunk

At the turn of the millennium Holland saw the birth
of a fresh, contemporary jazzquintet: Captain Hook!
Five eager young guys met in Amsterdam and found they
shared a wide-ranging interest in jazz and funk music.
These musicians create a tight group sound which is
steeped in improvisation and exploration. In original
compositions they combine great grooves with subtle
melodic and harmonic structures.

Jazz funk kwintet Captain Hook verscheen voor het eerst
op de Nederlandse muziekscene in 2005 met hun debuut-cd ‘Hooked Up’.
In 2007 brachten zij de opvolger ‘f.ex’ uit.
De muziek van energieke grooves in combinatie met
subtiele medlodieën en harmonische structuren werd enthousiast
ontvangen door pers en publiek.

De muzikanten smeden een hechte groepsound die drijft op
improvisatie en exploratie. In eigen composities combineren zij
lekkere grooves met fijnzinnige melodische en harmonische structuren.

Het debut album Hooked Up bracht de groep vele optredens op
jazzfestivals als mede in gerenommeerde jazzclubs in Nederland.
Ze kregen bovendien de uitnodiging te spelen tijdens de
prestigieuze Dutch Jazz Competition 2006.

In 2007 gingen zij een samenwerking aan met het modern
klassieke saxofoonkwartet Esquire (www.esquiresaxofoonkwartet.nl).
Verschillende Captain Hook composities en nieuwe geschreven materiaal
werd gebruikt om de grenzen tussen klassiek en jazz te verkennen
in een live situatie. Eind 2008 staat een toernee met Esquire gepland.

In 2007 bracht Captain Hook hun tweede cd ‘f.ex’ uit. Net als
het eerste album omvat f.ex alleen nieuwe eigen composities.
Voor dit album werden Bart Lust (New Cool Collective Bigband)
op trombone en Gerben Klein Willink (The Young Sinatras)
uitgenodigd om hun muzikale bijdrage te leveren.

In 2008 kijkt de groep verder dan de nationale clubs en festivals
als podium voor hun muziek. Ook staat er een nieuwe cross-over
project met verschillende artiesten gepland.

Their albums opened doors to numerous jazz festivals,
as well as famous jazz clubs in The Netherlands. It even
got them a invitation to play at the prestigious Dutch Jazz Competition 2006.

F.ex features trombone player Bart Lust (New Cool Collective Bigband)
and Gerben Klein Willink (The Young Sinatras) in Captain Hook’s original
compositions.

In 2008 they toured with classical saxophone-quartet Esquire
(www.esquiresaxofoonkwartet.nl). Several Captain Hook compositions,
as well as new written material by Corrie van Binsbergen a.o.,
were used as a means of exploring classical and jazz music in a live context.

In 2009 Captain Hook played at the BIMhuis, Amsterdam; had a
television appearance in VPRO’s ‘Vrije Geluiden’; and had a radio show
at 'Weekend Winfried, NPS Radio6'.
